Web Design - Web Standards

Web Page Design Standards W3CWhat are web standards?

Web Standards are technologies established by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), founded in 1994 by Tim Berners-Lee, the original architect of the World Wide Web. The W3C purpose was to develop open standards so that the Web evolved in a single direction rather than being splintered among competing factions. W3C develops specifications, guidelines, software and tools to lead the Web to its full potential. These technologies were designed to future-proof documents published on the Web, which ensures those documents are accessible an ever increasing amount of people via more types of Internet browsers and devices.

Web Standards are about making a website accessible to the largest possible scope of people, which ultimately increases the exposure and success of your website. By exposing a large amount of people to your website your website will penetrate the market and achieve your desired results.

In order to construct an accessible website, it must conform to Web Standards.

How do Web Standards benefit your business?

  • Lower development and maintenance costs:
This is due to simpler development and maintenance by using more semantic and structured HTML. Basically we use modular code, which means less code overall. This enables the content to be restyled easily without changing code. By simply changing the style sheet(s) we can make website-wide changes in minutes.

  • Lower hosting costs:
Less code results in smaller file sizes and quicker web page download times. Smaller file sizes mean lower bandwidth, which will lower hosting costs.

  • Increased usability:
Your customers will be able to download your website faster due to the smaller file sizes. This will encourage a wide range of customers, some of which might have slow internet connections, resulting in you needing your website to be displayed quickly if it is going to have any chance of having an impact on them. It basically makes it easier for customers to respond and show more interest in what you have to offer.

  • More visitor control:
Your visitors can control how they want to use your website. Web Standards give the visitor the ability to change the entire appearance of a page by clicking a button. For example, increasing the text size, moving the navigation bar to another place on the screen, etc.

  • Increased accessibility:
Semantic HTML or where structure is separated from presentation, makes it easier for screen readers and alternative browsing devices to decipher the content of your website, which will draw in a wider audience and create less chance of you getting into legal problems because of an inaccessible website.

  • Simplified code:
Less code and jargon makes it easier for people with minimal HTML or web site design knowledge to edit and update the website.

  • Increase in search engine ranking:
Semantic HTML, where structure is separated from presentation, makes the content represent a larger part of the total file content. Combined with semantic mark-up, this will improve search engine rankings. As your website search ability increases, so does the size of your potential client base. There are millions of websites on the internet and you don’t want yours to be impossible to find. Clue Design creates websites with high search ability enabling your website to be outstanding in your field.
