Google Set To Penalise Non-Mobile Friendly Websites

Mobile & Responsive

A good-looking website is a business necessity – a valuable piece of online real estate, accessible to the entirety of the Internet. It’s important to make sure people can find it. Potential customers or clients need to be able to “Google” you at the click of a button.

But is your website mobile friendly? Or do you have to pinch, scroll and zoom your way through on your smartphone? If you answered the latter, you now have an excellent reason to make it so.

In the name of offering a better online user experience, Google has announced that from April 21 2015, mobile friendly websites will rank more prominently on search results versus non-mobile friendly sites.

Google HQ has stated: "As more people use mobile devices to access the Internet, our algorithms have to adapt to suit these usage patterns."

The smartphone revolution has seen desktop computer internet usage ease off, with global mobile and tablet user traffic steadily increasing in recent years to the point we’re at now, where it actually exceeds desktop traffic.

But what does it mean to be mobile friendly?

Google defines mobile friendly sites by looking at whether:

  • Text is readable without zooming
  • Content is sized relative to the device screen
  • Links are sufficiently spaced apart (so they can be tapped properly)
  • Software that isn’t optimised for mobile devices is avoided.

The simplest way to ensure your website is mobile friendly is to have it developed or updated with a Mobile Responsive Web Design. This means the site dynamically and fluidly adapts to fit any device screen size, whether that is a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone.
